Affordable Housing.

Our Position

Population growth, higher land costs and the gentrification of core neighborhoods have combined to raise the cost of housing in Nashville to an unaffordable level for the average family. More than 54,000 Davidson County households earning less than $40,000 per year are paying more than 30 percent of household income for housing expenses, as are half of all renters and homeowners in Davidson County. Our current housing inventory shortage requires an immediate addition of 20,000 affordable units and another 20,000 workforce units.

Nashville needs to address this shortage through intentional housing and land use policies that will increase our housing supply and create reasonable affordable options. We believe that inclusionary zoning best practices will result in socio-economically diverse neighborhoods. Our city must significantly increase our investment in the Barnes Housing Trust Fund, which provides moneys to build affordable housing who earn 60 percent or less of the average median income. The fund should be brought to the level of other proactive intermediate-sized cities which will result in the creation of affordable housing for the least among us.
